Report: Bracknell Town 7 Wokingham & Emmbrook 1

Bluefin Sports Supplementary Challenge Cup Quarter Final: Thursday 7th April 2016

Meeting for the second time in a week at Larges Lane the teams had their eyes on a different prize this evening as they looked to progress and the home side couldn’t have started better as good interplay down the left between John Gray and Seb Bowerman allowed the latter to cross into the box for George Short to nod the ball down where Adam Cornell was waiting to open the scoring as early as the 3rd minute writes Nick Calvert.

Sumas showed that they weren’t going to be overawed by conceding so early when Craig Haylett got behind The Robins defence and moments later James Clark hit a low shot which had Gary Aulsberry scrambling to push it round the post. However the visitors were not to be denied when the ball fell to Elliott Rushforth from that resulting corner kick and his shot nestled in the back of the net to make it 1-1 after just 10 minutes.

Even though Wokingham & Emmbrook were always a threat and their back four played a high line to use the offside trap effectively, they still had to fend off plenty of attacks in the first half with Sam Woodward being kept busy to deny Cornell & Kennie Chamberlain,  and Short having a point blank header saved on the line.

Eventually all the pressure paid dividends though when Cornell perfectly met Gray’s cross to head home making him Bracknell’s top scorer for the season, and in fact he had bagged his hatrick just before the half time whistle blew as he ran onto a ball over the top and managed to beat the outrushing Woodward to the ball.

Sumas came out for the second half knowing that they had to start on the front foot and Luke Scope had the first chance to show their intent when he beat the offside trap to go clear but Aulsberry was alive to the danger and managed to race out from his area to clear the danger.

Two goals in three minutes for the Robins shortly after this effectively killed off the tie though when another cross from Gray was headed down by Declan Kirby with Carl Davies on hand to apply the finishing touch. Damien Smith was the provider for the next goal with a long ball into the box which Cornell controlled on his chest before beating Woodward to make it 5-1.

The visitors continued to probe with Rushforth setting Scope in on goal only to be denied by Aulsberry as he sprinted off his line and former Robin Jordan Rowland forcing him to tip the ball over the bar with a long range effort.

However to rub salt into the wounds it was Bracknell who rounded off the evening with a further two goals from sub Ben Poynter when Davies and another sub George Lock provided balls in from the right.

The result certainly seemed to back up the programme notes from Mark Tallentire that with league survival all but achieved the cups would receive the clubs full attention, and lays down quite a mark for the other semi-finalists to take note of.
