Finchampstead take derby spoils and Bracknell Town thrash Burnham – Boxing Day round-up

FootballinBracknell were in attendance today as Finchampstead beat Wokingham & Emmbrook 2-1 to claim the bragging rights in a feisty and typical local derby which saw both sides finish with ten players.

The home side started slowly and found themselves trailing as a poor clearance stuck Elliott Rushforth who then rounded goalkeeper Neil Griffith to slot into an empty net.

Finch responded and played the better but had no composure in shooting before stand-in goalkeeper Tom McNelly did ever so well to prevent Danny Blatchford from equalising.

It looked like the Sumas would lead at the interval but Johnathan Malone headed in as the visitors were deservedly on equal terms at the break.

Matt Lambert curled in from the edge of the penalty area as the hosts moved ahead before he picked up a second caution for needlessly kicking the ball away and was dismissed.

Wokingham piled forward looking for a leveller as tempers got frayed towards the end with the home side content to keep the ball in the corner.

Substitute George Marsh was sent off to ensure both sides finished with ten men after letting the referee know what he thought of him, something which cannot be broadcast before the watershed.

Delight at the end for Finch who created more and move up a place to sixth today.

In the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division, Bracknell Town met Burnham for a fourth time this season and they cruised to a seven goal victory.

Adam Cornell opened the scoring inside three minutes and fellow striker TJ Bohane doubled the advantage soon after.

It looked like the floodgates might open but it took another 35 minutes for the third goal with Seb Bowerman scoring his eighth penalty of the season.

Jamie McClurg made it four soon after the interval before two Bohane goals gave him his hat-trick and substitute Gavin Smith got the seventh goal near the end.

Victory keeps the Robins in second place but with Thame United not playing on Saturday, the Larges Lane side play their game in hand and can finish 2016 top of the pile with victory at Highmoor Ibis.

It was a bad day for the second placed side in Division One East as Woodley United fell to a 3-1 defeat home to Didcot Town Reserves.

The visitors took an early lead heading in a corner and that’s how it stayed until half-time.

A second headed goal doubled the advantage before United pulled one back straight from the restart through Greg Beckett without a Didcot player touching the ball.

Joe Painter was sent off late on with Didcot scoring the resulting penalty to claim all three points.

In a midday kick-off, Sandhurst Town beat Holyport 2-1 to move into eleventh place.

Alex Penny struck twice for the Fizzers before Paul Rake volleyed in Tom Attrell’s free-kick just before the interval.

There were no further goals after the break as the home side claimed the victory.

Last but not means least and it was a great Boxing Day for AFC Aldermaston who climbed up to third place with a 4-0 victory away at basement side Wantage Town Reserves.

We don’t have scorers for this one but a fantastic win was marred by two players having to go to hospital and we hope they are both ok.

Binfield and Ascot United were not in action as the sides meet at Stubbs Lane tomorrow night in a 7.45pm kick-off. We’ll have more on that one in due course.
