Binfield fans enjoyed a brief glimpse of Luke Williams during the 2010/11 season after he joined the Moles at Christmas from Woodley Town.

The midfielder was snapped up by Conference Premier side Hayes & Yeading United that summer but he made a lasting impression on the Binfield chairman Bob Bacon.

He said: “Luke played for us from about the Christmas and he was a stand out player who’s contribution was measurable by games that we won with him in the side”.

“It was clear that he could play at a couple of levels above the Hellenic League.”

Hayes were relegated that season but Williams made 41 appearances scoring four goals for United and continued to be a regular for the following two seasons.

According to the official website, Williams was made ‘an offer he couldn’t refuse’ by Ryman Premier side Margate in the summer of 2014 and dropped down a level.

Whether that is the case or not, Williams joined a Margate side destined for promotion to the Conference South via the play-offs at the end of the season – and were managed by none other than Binfield resident Terry Brown.

Ex-Hayes, Aldershot Town and AFC Wimbledon manager Brown lasted until a poor start to that subsequent Conference South campaign but Williams had already returned to Hayes after 15 appearances and one goal for the South Coast club.

Williams return to Hayes 6 months after leaving wasn’t enough to end the annual relegation struggle and United dropped into the Southern Premier League at the end of the 2015/16 season.

So where is he now?

Williams is staying in the Conference South after being snapped up by new boys Hungerford Town.

The West Berkshire side won promotion from the Southern Premier Division after defeating Leamington 2-1 in the play-off final – not bad for a club who were in the Hellenic Premier League just seven seasons ago.

He’s already been in amongst the goals, getting on the score sheet during the Crusaders 5-0 win over Gloucestershire side Tadley Rovers.
