A series of events that involve Arsene Wenger, Paul Tisdale and John Askey mean one former Bracknell Town & District Sunday League player is now the EFL’s second longest serving manager.

Wenger, Tisdale (Exeter) and Askey (Macclesfield) all leaving their respective clubs this summer

Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth is now second behind Morecambe’s Jim Bentley in the list of managers who’ve stood the test of time with the former Finchampstead player approaching six years in charge at Adams Park.

Ainsworth, the former QPR, Preston and Wimbledon player was a regular in the Bracknell Sunday League for Finchampstead until he hung up his boots last summer.

Rumours

How long that record remains is a matter of significant rumour though with QPR thought to have been interested before appointing Steve McLaren and Barnsley currently considering him – at least according to Google News anyway.

In a previous interview Ainsworth admitted he enjoyed just being ‘one of the boys’ for Finch and joked that cult Wycombe striker Adebayo Akinfenwa would be pretty handy in the ‘rough and tumble’ world of Sunday football.

The longest serving managers in the top four leagues according to Bristol Live are:

  1. Jim Bentley (Morecambe) – 7 years, 19 days
  2. Gareth Ainsworth (Wycombe Wanderers) – 5 years, 250 days
  3. Neal Ardley (AFC Wimbledon) 5 years, 234 days
  4. Eddie Howe (Bournemouth) – 5 years, 231 days
  5. Sean Dyche (Burnley) – 5 years, 214 days
  6. Keith Hill (Rochdale) – 4 years, 130 days
  7. Darrell Clarke (Bristol Rovers) – 4 years, 65 days
