A recent visit to Cherrywood Road – the home of Farnborough Town is a bit of a nostalgic ride for any long standing Bracknell Town fan.

Not you understand because of the 2007/08 season when the two sides competed in the Southern League Division 1 South & West but because surrounding the club shop are some info panels showing off the clubs history, and in particular one Brian Broome.

Broome, according to the information (which I’ve included in images below) is the clubs record appearance maker, turning out over 500 times for the North Hampshire side.

The text in the image reads: “Brian was Farnborough Town’s record holder for most appearances. He came through Camberley’s youth sides and also played for their first team against Farnborough. He must have impressed as Boro snapped him up and he made his debut in a goalless draw at Ware on 16th August 1980. It was to be the first of over 500 appearances for the club.

“His last match was a 6-0 victory at Corby at the end of the 1993/94 Southern Premier League winning season. Most fans will remember him scoring what turned out to be the crucial fourth goal against Torquay in the 1991/92 FA Cup. In total he made 530 starts for the club, 10 substitute appearances and scored 109 goals.”

According to the Aldershot Town archive, Brian Broome had three spells at Cherrywood Road from 1980 to 1987 when he joined Wokingham Town, then 1990 to 1992 when he joined Basingstoke Town and finally 1993 to 1994.

Bracknell Town

By 1994 Broome was on his second spell at Bracknell Town having previously been at Larges Lane between October 1992 February 1993 and became player manager in 1996 before joining Wokingham Town again in 1998, his final destination.

Bracknell finished 11th and 16th in the Isthmian League Second Division during Broome’s two seasons in the hot seat.

Broome’s commitment, and we assume largely injury free playing career meant he went on to make – according to Bracknell statto Rob Scully – 123 appearances for the Robins scoring 15 goals.

An update from former Wokingham & Emmbrook and current Binfield manager Roger Herridge. He’s pointed out Brian is the father of Jack – familiar to supporters of both the Moles and Sumas.
