As a website that primarily covers local clubs we felt it would be interesting to rank all fifteen Berkshire based clubs down to Level 10 (Step 6 in the pyramid) by league position for the season just gone.

It is likely that fans of Reading won’t be too impressed with their club’s season, however they finish as the top club in Berkshire. Maidenhead United who had a wonderful first season at National League level finish in second place for the county. Hungerford Town, survived in the Conference South by finishing just outside of the relegation spots.

Slough Town, Thatcham Town and Bracknell Town finished as fourth, fifth and sixth best Berkshire club and all will be playing at a step higher next season as all three were promoted. These three clubs recorded the best points per game in Berkshire this season.

Overall it’s been a good season for football in Berkshire, with Thatcham Town also winning the county’s first ever FA Vase by defeating Stockton Town 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

But Steve, who is the best team?

Of course, this is all well and good but the teams play at different levels and the majority don’t play each other – we long for the day Reading enter the County Cup but we’ll probably have to keep dreaming on that front.

The fairest way then to identify the ‘best team’ is clearly on a points per game basis and much like the end of the Hellenic League Premier Division season, it’s Thatcham Town take the title on goal difference from Bracknell Town.

Here’s the list by PPG:

  1. Thatcham Town – 2.58
  2. Bracknell Town – 2.58
  3. Slough Town – 2.15
  4. Sandhurst Town – 1.88
  5. Holyport – 1.75
  6. Wokingham & Emmbrook – 1.71
  7. Binfield – 1.68
  8. Maidenhead United – 1.39
  9. Windsor – 1.37
  10. Ascot United – 1.05
  11. Hungerford Town – 1.02
  12. Reading – 0.96
  13. AFC Aldermaston – 0.83
  14. Highmoor Ibis – 0.76
  15. Woodley United – 0.68

Note: We excluded Virginia Water FC from the table as despite playing their game at Windsor’s Berkshire based Stag Meadow, Virginia Water is in Surrey.
