Ascot United assistant manager Paul McGrotty called Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Longlevens AFC ‘frustrating’ and ‘the story of our season’.

McGrotty said there were plenty of positives in the way his side dominated the game for the 90 minutes but mistakes in Ascot’s final third cost the Yellamen.

The assistant boss said “It was a mad five minutes at the end of the game that cost us the three points’ as Longlevens equalised with a penalty in the final stages of the game.”

Speaking to our man Mark Pugh, McGrotty spoke about the pre-season saying: “This season has been tough for me, Jeff [Lamb] and Sweets [coach Derek Sweetman]. It’s been frustrating and we had a good chat after last weeks defeat and today was really pleasing with the response.

He added: “We’ve got a tough run of games, it’s time to look forward and it’s a run we are looking forward to.”

McGrotty also hailed the clubs three youngsters who have come to the fore this season including James Goodey up front on his own as well as two goal Samir Regragui and Louis Gilpin.

He said: “Goodey has been our bright light for the last six weeks, he’s come on leaps and bounds and he’s really started to have that Joe Grant [ex-Ascot forward] look about him in terms of the same sort of development.

Speaking about new signing Richard Jones, McGrotty called him a ‘strong left-back and very good for the group in terms of his personality’.

He added: “We looking to bring more people in all the time, we’ve got a point to prove to people”.
