Our man Mark Pugh was along for the ride as Ascot United travelled to Newhaven on the South Coast for the Second Round of the Buildbase FA Vase.

He writes: Looking at it, it was Ascot United’s game to lose. Statistically I should think the Yellamen hat the most possession and just needed a goal to settle their nerves and change the game on a greasy wet pitch.

There was a silly challenge in the second half that gave the referee no choice but to award the home side a spot kick which was duly converted.

Ascot soon bounced back with some clever moves in the attacking third, one coming to the feet of James Goodey who planted the ball past Jake Bass the Newhaven ‘keeper.

Still it looked like Ascot could get the winner, a strong bench started to replace tired legs with the Yellamen again looking the side that would come out with a winner or at least bring Newhaven back up to the Racecourse ground for a Tuesday night replay.

It wasn’t to be though – in a twist of fate after Ascot’s late winner in the previous round – a chance in the 92nd minute put paid to all that. Newhaven caught Ascot a little on the counter attack sending last years quarter finalists out of the vase and the The Dockers as Newhaven are known into round three.
