We are constantly reminded not to get too carried away with results in pre season but Slough Town were mightily impressive against Boreham Wood in midweek.
The Rebels scored goals for fun en route to winning promotion last season – 111 in 46 league matches – and could have bagged more than the three they did during the first half at Arbour Park.
Slough joint-manager Jon Underwood remained tight-lipped on their targets in the National League South, but I believe they could be in a position to have a crack at reaching the play-offs in the final weeks of the season.
It was not all good news for the Rebels this week as midfielder Harrison Gilkes made the tough decision to retire from football after struggling with a degenerative hip.
It is so sad to see a talented footballer forced to retire so young (24) and I wish Harrison all the best in his future endeavours. He always had a smile on his face and it would be great to see him back at Arbour Park supporting Slough at some point.
Mick Woodham returned to the dugout at Windsor this week and I am mightily relieved that he has. He and Ashley Smith worked miracles last season and built the club a foundation to move forward on the pitch.
Windsor were well beaten at Bedfont Sports and Bracknell Town in midweek, but do not think that is a true reflection on what the team can achieve this season.
There are a number of players still to return so I expect Windsor to be in a good place for the big kick-off, though Brimscombe & Thrupp away is surely one of the most tough fixtures to have on the opening day.
Elsewhere, Premier Division new boysVirginia Water have set their sights on a mid-table finish and could do so if their fitness and discipline levels can improve from last season.
Burnham are aiming for promotion in Division One East and, based on the squad Paul Shone has put together at The Gore, their rivals might be fighting for second place at best.
