Owen Powell is the latest product of the burgeoning Binfield Football Club youth system to make his senior debut for the Hill Farm Lane side after coming on as a 55th minute substitute in the 2-1 Reading Senior Cup win at Holyport on Tuesday night.

Powell joins Allied Counties teammates Luke Hayden and Charlie Craske in appearing for Roger Herridge’s side, and the manager was effusive in his praise for the youngster who has been an unused sub for the first team on three occasions this season.

Herridge said: “Owen has been one of the stand out players in this seasons Allied Counties squad. He has been an unused sub for a handful of games so it was great to actually get him his debut.

“He came on and slotted in at right back when Jake White got injured. He did really well and didn’t look out of place confirming what we already knew, that he has a really bright future.”

Speaking about the Moles youngsters, Herridge added: “This seasons Allied Squad is probably the best since I have been First Team manager. Luke Hayden has become a permanent fixture in the first team set up and a number of others such as Owen, Charlie Craske and Ewan Lynch are playing regularly for Ellis Woods in the Development Squad.”

‘One of the most inquisitive players I’ve coached’

We spoke to Woods who was equally delighted with Powell’s progression saying: “He is one of the most inquisitive players I’ve coached. I have worked with him for just over two years now in a youth shirt and with the development side. He can play in numerous positions but thrives playing centre half and building attacks from a deeper position.

“In my opinion, it shouldn’t be long before we see him regularly playing in our first team, watch this space!”

‘We are committed to producing good young players’

Powell has been almost ever present in the Allied Counties Youth League for Binfield this season playing eight times for the under 18s.

Assistant manager Mark Poole messaged FiB saying: “Everyone in the youth set up wants to congratulate Owen on his debut for the first team. It’s down to hard work, learning at training and consistently good performances.

“It highlights how committed we are at producing good players at our youth set up and moving them trough the reserves to the first team, one of the few clubs that can achieve this in the area.

“A massive well done to Owen and this is his reward for having a fantastic first half of he season for the Allied’s.”

Binfield’s youngsters are in action on Thursday night in the South Division as they look to gain promotion to the Premier. They host league leaders Camberley Town at Hill Farm Lane but will go into the match as favourites after winning the previous encounter 5-1.
