Berks County can make step 6 promotion happen says joint boss

Berks County were the only Thames Valley Premier League side to apply for promotion to step 6 this season according to a list released online this week.

The club, celebrating its 10th anniversary this season, currently play at the Ryeish Green Sports Hub which currently wouldn’t meet ground grading specifications should the club win a promotion place.

However, speaking to Football in Berkshire, Berks County’s joint first team manager Ellis Woods confirmed that the club felt confident enough the work could be done to make applying for promotion worthwhile.

‘We wouldn’t have applied if we didn’t think we could meet the required ground specs in time’

He said: “We applied just in time in December.

“Everyone who knows myself and Lee Simpson will understand where our ambitions lie. This is in line with the club.

“Is there work to be done? Absolutely.

“However, we wouldn’t have applied if we didn’t think we could meet the required ground specs in time.

“This hasn’t been a knee jerk decision, we’ve got the right ideas and relationships in place to hopefully make things happen over the summer.

“That being said, from a football point of view, we want to earn the right to represent the club at a higher level. Lee kicked off the project two years ago and I’ve joined this season. We’re enjoying ourselves!

“We’re taking the second half of the season one game at a time and certainly myself and Lee will continue to keep everybody within the senior section grounded as we attempt to take the club somewhere it’s not been before.”

The Swords are currently second in the Thames Valley Premier League Premier Division and are due to host fellow title chasers Maidenhead Town at Ryeish Green on Saturday.
