The season may have been curtailed, but Vanarama National League side Maidenhead United have already begun preparing for the 2020/21 season that will be the clubs 150th anniversary.

As part of that milestone, the club have launched a smart new crest that will see the club through it’s sesquicentennial anniversary and beyond.

The new crest was designed in consultation with the clubs fans. A statement on the Magpies website said: “As would be expected from a community club, fan engagement is at the heart of all that we do. The process of designing a new club crest started back in October 2019 with an open meeting for all supporters at the club following a home match. As a result of that meeting, an online survey was then drawn up to give our followers the opportunity to have their say on the key themes which they would associate with a Maidenhead United club badge.”

The club can trace it’s origins back to 1870 as depicted on the new crest when Maidenhead Football Club were formed. According to the history page on the clubs website, the team played their first ever fixture on December 17th, 1870 against Windsor Home Park at Bond’s Meadow near Maidenhead bridge. The ‘United’ was added when in 1919, the towns two remaining clubs after the war, Maidenhead FC and Maidenhead Norfolkians merged.

Club director Steve Jinman, speaking to Football in Berkshire said: “The key elements of badge are the colours – red and black from orgininal Maidenhead FC, and white for Norfolkians. The stripes were used off and on from 1920s onwards but consistently since 1994/5. The Thames river bridge represents the town and is adjacent to Bonds Meadow where first match was played in 1870.”

The Magpies are expected to launch a special kit to mark the 150th anniversary, but in the meantime there are some bargains on 2019/20 merchandise to be had in the club store, including replica kit.
