Thames Valley Premier League Division Three side Datchet Village have announced they will be known simply as Datchet FC from the 2020/21 season onward.

Whilst not a radical departure, the current club – originally founded in 1986 as a Sunday League side, has taken on the historical name of the East Berkshire villages football club.

According to excerpts in the British Newspaper Archive, Datchet had a team in the Reading Temperance League as far back as 1898.

The announcement of the name change was posted on the clubs Twitter account: “Delighted to announce we are now Datchet Football Club, acquiring the name a few weeks ago. We are proud that it ties us to the original club that was formed in the early 1900’s.”

Datchet’s Saturday side joined the TVPL in 2018/19, winning the Fourth Division title at the first attempt and played in Division Two in 2019/20 before the season was curtailed.

The club are ambitious with club secretary Andrew Clemens saying previously to Football in Berkshire: “[Our aim] is to get as high as we possibly can as a club. We would like to become a semi pro club as Langley and Chalvey Sports have done and then see where we go from there. Datchet has always had strong football clubs based here in the past and as the last remaining and official side, we want to do our local community proud by being the best that we can be.”

Datchet, situated in the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, have two teams in the Thames Valley Sunday League playing in Division’s 2 and 4.
