Woodley United have a bit of rare midweek football action to look forward to with the visit of Gloucestershire Lydney Town in the third round of the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup.

It’s been a rocky road to the third round for United after they were thrown out for fielding an inelligible player in round one, a charge that was later overturned on appeal by the Football Association, meaning Woodley were reinstated in the competition.

In that time though Sandhurst – the beneficiaries of Woodley’s expulsion played a second round tie against Royal Wootton Bassett Town that was declared void by the Kestrals return.

Woodley then played Bassett – who had already played a third round tie against Lydney after beating Sandhurst – in a second round fixture, setting up tonights tie against Lydney.

I am not sure I’ve explained that brilliantly, suffice to say it sounds like the competition’s organisers should have been on top of..

On to tonight though, it’s a strong looking Woodley side that goes in to the cup tie but manager Michael Herbert will be without top scorer Charlie Oakley who twisted his ankle at the weekend against Wokingham & Emmbrook in the Reading Senior Cup.

Speaking to FiB Oakley said: “I’m gutted to be missing out but it shows our strength in depth that we still look strong without me tonight! I’ll be backing the lads to get the result.”

Woodley are already in one final this season after reaching the Berks & Bucks County Intermediate Cup Final where they will play Thames Valley Premier League side Marlow United.

Also in action tonight Ascot United have a league match at home to bottom side Henley Town with with new manager Neil Richards looking for his first league win.
