Woodley United Ladies are back in SSE Women’s FA Cup action on Sunday, three weeks after being knocked out by Oxford City when they entertain Alton at Bulmershe Pavilion (ko 2pm) in the Second Qualifying Round.

Ascot United are already out after a 2-0 defeat to Chesham United on Sunday – the Yellawomen won in the First Qualifying Round following a penalty shoot out with with Newbury – meaning Marc Surtees side are our sole representatives left in the tournament.

United’s second chance in the competition is owed to the Football Association who threw out Oxford City for fielding an ineligible player after they beat Woodley 9-0 in the First Qualifying Round at the start of September.

History

We spoke to Kestrels secretary Mark Rozzier about the clubs history in the competition.

He said: “The furthest stage the club has reach is the second qualifying round, where we start this season competition.  That was in 2015/16 season when we lost to QPR Development 4-0 at home. In the previous round we had beaten Brentford 2-0 at home thanks to goals by Jess Grimmett and Ellen Surtees.

“Prior to that our only previous outing in the Cup was in 2014/15 season losing at home 3-1 to Old Actonians who now play in FA Women’s Premier League Division 1 South. Sarah Davern (now at Ascot United) scored our goal.”

Team manager Marc Surtees – who we interviewed prior to the season kicking off said: “The ladies are excited about the game, it’s a good competition to be involved in and we will be working hard to progress to the next round. Alton are a good side, strong and well organised. We have had many good close matches against them and we’re really looking forward to this weekend.”

United have started the season strongly in the Southern Region Women’s Football League Division 1 North earning a win and a draw from their opening two matches and the winners of Sunday’s tie will face a trip to FA Women’s Premier League South East Division One side AFC Wimbledon.
