It’s been a busy week of FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round action with Binfield FC given the tough task of upsetting five time consecutive Allied Counties Premier champions Maidenhead United.

The Moles were narrowly beaten 2-1 at York Road and we caught up with assistant manager Mark Poole post match.

He writes: For 65 minutes we outplayed the Premier Division champions, dominating possession and hitting the bar twice. Their keeper making two saves from point blank range. Our two strikers Ewan Lynch and Luke Hayden proved to be too difficult to mark for the Maidenhead defence and led the front line brilliantly, creating many of our chances. Jack Rafferty provided width and pace down the right flank to add to the nightmares causes to the Maidenhead back four. To go in at half time, 0-0, we felt we was very unlucky.

We always knew that Maidenhead had quality, you do not dominate the Allied Counties without having a bit about you and in the 65th minute, we conceded a goal which we feel we could have done more to stop. From there on in we was chasing the game, pushing to score a goal which would bring us back in, unfortunately we conceded a second… both goals against the run of play.

Into the last 5 minutes, we found an equaliser through Freeman Mulipola making a run at the back post from a Charlie Craske corner and we pushed on for a second but we couldn’t find that last chance to finish.

It was a game we can all feel disappointed by but we went toe to toe with a very good side and we outplayed them for a majority of the game but came away with nothing. On the other hand, it does show how good this squad is and how much talent we have in our youth set up.

The team have laid down a huge marker on what we expect as a minimal performance for match days. If the boys continue with this hard work, determination and exciting football, we expect to do well in the league and challenge for top spot.

Youth captain Charlie Craske added: “We could have been 3 or 4 up at halftime. We gave a team that have dominated youth football in the area for 5 yeas a real tough game. This gives us a great platform for the lads in the season ahead.

“We start our league campaign away to Windsor next Monday night, a game the squad and the coaching staff are all looking forward too, a good opportunity to build on the platform from this week.”
