The annual campaign to encourage supporters of Premier League and Football League clubs to attend a match a local club, known as Non League Day is fast approaching.

The date for the campaigns big day is Saturday 7th October during the international break when England play Slovenia and Lithuania and the Premier League and Championship takes a weekend off.

There are still fixtures in League 1 and 2 of the football league, but the campaign – in to it’s eighth season after starting in 2010 – will undoubtedly hog the spot light and hopefully encourage supporters of clubs not in action to attend a match at a lower league side.

This passage from the campaigns website ‘about’ page pretty much sums it up:

Many non-league clubs are almost exclusively volunteer run, with money taken at the turnstiles often funding thriving youth set-ups, projects and facilities which are of benefit to the whole community. The level of skill on offer at non-league grounds will never compare to that at the Emirates Stadium or Old Trafford, for example, but there are other sides to the experience, from which the smaller club will always win hands down. The vast majority of games still kick off at 3pm, ticket prices are realistic, you can often stand (and drink!) anywhere in the ground and will always be guaranteed a warm welcome by people who run their clubs for a love of the game.

Getting involved

Involvement in non league day can start with simply finding the closest game to you and heading along.

That might be a park pitch with limited facilities (but definitely a tea hut) or a proper four sided ground. Whatever you fancy, and there’s a map with all the matches on the day on the NLD website.

It could also mean popping down your local club and volunteering a few hours and a bit of expertise.

Whatever you do, make sure you spread the word!

We’ve pulled together a list of all the local fixtures here.
