Wokingham & Emmbrook Ladies manager John Lilley has been nominated for an EPC Bracknell Football Award in the category of ‘Outstanding contribution to local football’.

We’ll let the nomination text do the talking: He first started at coaching and managing at Wokingham & Emmbrook around 8 years ago when he created a new girls football team. For all of those years despite living the furthest away in Surrey, every week he is there for training and games to give everyone the chance to play. Especially in the first few years when lots of girls had only been playing a short time.

He constantly got opposition parents praising him for making sure ALL players could play well and got equal time on the pitch rather than focusing on just one players ability. He was able to do this because of his love for the game and by attending the courses to get his coaching badges.

He’s used this knowledge to not only keep the team he started going (by creating the first women’s team) but also by helping the other girls teams who had trained before his training sessions. Without his hard work a lot of girls would not have had the chance to play or improve their football.

Another nomination reads: Year on year he has not just managed his own team through to forming Wokingham & Emmbrook’s first women’s team but also helped build a legacy of girls football for many families to enjoy in the years to come.

There are now girls teams right through the age groups with the Women’s team providing a goal for talented players to progress to.

He’ll never ask for recognition and travels all the way from Surrey every week for both training and game day with the Women’s teams and girls teams when needed.

A stalwart of the community and someone that gets building a family club that can support future talent development the right sustainable way, helping each player reach their own goals in a supportive, safe and fun environment.
