The Football Association has published the plan for their ‘perfect’ Non League Football Pyramid which should be in place for the 2020/21 season.

As part of the restructuring, new divisions were created at step 3 and 4 this summer, benefitting Thatcham Town, Bracknell Town and Highworth Town who all earned promotion from the Hellenic League.

As part of a significant release on the FA website, the governing body confirmed that two clubs would be relegated from every step 5 League (so Hellenic and Combined Counties Premier in our case) at the end of the 2018/19 season.

The release states: “Next season, the bottom two clubs of each of the 14 Step 5 divisions will be relegated to Step 6.

“28 clubs from the 19 divisions are required from Step 6. The 19 champion clubs are promoted and the 19 second-placed clubs are ranked in order of points per game – the nine clubs with the best points per game will also be promoted.”

So much like this season in the Hellenic Premier, 9 third placed team will be promoted from step 6 (Hellenic Division 1 East and West) based on a points per game analysis from across the country.

Why are the FA making these changes?

According to the release, the Football Associations aim is to create a perfect 1-2-4-8-16 structure for steps 1 to 5 of the English Football Pyramid.

That means that between now and 2020 we can expect to see another division added at step 4, and two more at step 5. The current structure is 1-2-4-7-14.

The FA’s states aim is for a fair and consistent promotion and relegation across the country, to reduce travel and to eradicate the mixed bag of promotion opportunities at step 6. The full FA release is here.
