Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 East side Abingdon Town need an injection of £20,000 if the club is to continue according to media reports.

The Oxford Mail has run an interview with new chairman Joe Bailey who has revealed he is paying the clubs bills – which include Hellenic League fines for failing to fulfil fixtures this season, himself after previous chairman Jayson Lyon resigned on October 12.

Mr Bailey says the club will not be able to continue past February if he cannot get it on an even financial footing and needs the money to refurbish the clubs kitchen and bar.

Speaking to the Mail, he said: “This [the kitchen and bar] is one of the club’s single biggest earners. Proceeds enable the club to open its doors; it also complements player subscriptions so we can increase team numbers, lower costs to players, and improve facilities.”

The club has started a crowdfunding page at gofundme.com alongside side the Culham Road clubs ladies section who have already raised £700.

Town only returned to the Hellenic League in 2017 after several seasons in the North Berks League. The club have a good historical pedigree having spent much the 1990s in the Isthmian League, dropping in to the Hellenic League in 2005, eventually leaving in 2014.
