The Supporter of the Season category is one of our favourites in the Bracknell Football Awards sponsored by Elite Preparation Centre because it gives those inside the fence the opportunity to give something back to the people who back them home and away, come rain or shine. And let’s face it, it’s mostly rain.

As we gear up for this years ceremony, we were sent this account from Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division side Ascot United.

“Ascot United wishes to propose David Bucktrout as Bracknell Football Awards’ fan of the year. Dave has become a legendary figure at The Racecourse.

Despite his age, despite being dependant on a mobility scooter to get around, and despite a long-term battle with skin cancer that has led to 25 separate operations, he is a regular fixture at home and away games.

“After one of his most recent operations, he turned up with his head bandaged and in discomfort – but that didn’t matter to Dave as long as he was there to shout for his heroes.

“Even more remarkably, this support extends to the men’s and ladies’ sides!

“He will drive himself to away games with his scooter in his car boot, and he is a constant at the Ladies’ fixtures on a Sunday afternoon. And, this support has continued despite cancer recently spreading to his throat. He is adored by the players, who recognise his unfettering support for them; a point underlined by each of them who make a specific point of acknowledging him after each game.

“And, most importantly of all, Dave is a true gent and the embodiment of respect within our game. There really is “only one David Bucktrout.””
