The news reached Football in Berkshire headquarters on Monday that EFL League One side Wycombe Wanderers would return to the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Cup night.

This means that after Reading FC returned to the competition after two decades away last season, all three of the County FA’s professional Football League clubs will compete in 2019/20.

Last season, Reading put out an under 23 side that eventually reached the final – losing to Slough Town – while MK Dons similarly play a development side.

So what sort of team are the Chairboys – managed by Gareth Ainsworth – likely to put out? That answer came slightly easier than we expected via a post on the club official website.

According to the post, the club withdrew prior to the 2014/15 side owing to a lack of reserve, development or under-18 teams at the club to take part.

That has all changed now though with the club running a larger squad of 23 players this season. Chairman Trevor Stroud called it a ‘mark of the clubs progress’ that they can run a bigger squad and re-enter the competition.

Of course we’ll be looking to win every game that we play – as we always do – so it would be great if we could end the season with some silverware.

Gareth Ainsworth – Wycombe Wanderers manager

On the club website, Ainsworth said: “We had to make the difficult decision not to take part in the cup five years ago, to make sure we didn’t over-burden ourselves with too many fixtures given the small squad we had at the time.

“This season we’ve been able to strengthen the squad in terms of quality and numbers, and we want to make sure that everyone stays fit and sharp so that they’re ready to be called upon when needed.”

All that suggest that the team that walks out in this seasons Berks & Bucks County Cup will be a strong one, likely sprinkled with players who have EFL League One experience in the bag this season.

The draw for the Preliminary Round of the Senior Cup is here.
