The Preliminary Round of the 2019/20 FA Cup takes place on Saturday up and down the country and their are four Berkshire sides in the mix looking to progress.
There are two games at home and two away as Bracknell Town, Thatcham Town, Binfield and Reading City all look to progress in the competition. The draw for the FA Cup First Qualifying Round is released at 1pm on Tuesday 27th August.
Binfield vs Lymington Town
League: Wessex League Premier Division Step: 5 Last Seasons Finish: 10th
The difference in this one could simply be the strength of the Hellenic Premier vs the strength of the Wessex Premier. Binfield top the former while Lymington are 5th in the latter with two wins and a defeat.
Lymington beat Cowes Sports 4-0 in the previous round and have scored 11 in all competitions – their one defeat? Away to AFC Stoneham who knocked the Moles out of the FA Vase last season.
Verdict: Binfield have some big experience in their side this season and that should see them through.
Bournemouth vs Bracknell Town
League: Wessex League Premier Division Step: 5 Last Seasons Finish: 3rd
Bournemouth, popularly known as the Poppies have had a bit of a mixed start to the season so far, winning one, drawing one and losing one of their opening three league fixtures.
They beat Combined Counties Premier side Frimley Green 2-1 in the previous round to setup the visit of Bracknell. Last season, the had decent away form but to many draws at home cost them a shot at the top two.
Verdict: Could be tricky if Bracknell don’t start well but the Robins should have more than enough firepower.
Moneyfields vs Reading City
League: Southern League Division One South Step: 4 Last Seasons Finish: 4th
Arguably the toughest of the four ties for our Berkshire sides. There has already been some off the field controversy with this one as City are unhappy the tie has been switched to Portsmouth despite making every effort to get the game on.
It’s difficult to judge anything about Moneyfields, they’re a division above in the BetVictor Southern League Division One South but have only played two games – a 1-0 defeat at Bideford and a 1-1 draw with Thatcham. Reading in contrast have won all four matches, keeping three clean sheets in the process so will be confident going in.
Verdict: City will need to be disciplined and guard against complacency after last weeks 10-0 win but are in great form and could just spring a surprise.
Thatcham Town vs Andover New Street
League: Wessex League Division One Step: 6 Last Seasons Finish: 20/20 in the Wessex Premier
Andover New Street currently top the Wessex League Division One with two wins and a draw from their opening games but a trip to Thatcham Town two division higher will be their toughest test so far.
New Street beat Bemerton Heath Harlequins 3-2 in a replay after drawing the original tie 3-3. The Hampshire side aren’t short of goals though having already scored 16 in all competitions shared between seven players.
Verdict: Thatcham should be to strong.
