A fund has been setup to raise money for Berkshire footballer Tom Melledew after he was injured in an accident at work.

The FA Vase winning former Thatcham Town captain and Binfield midfielder is, according to the newly launched GoFundMe page, currently in the John Radcliffe Hospital recovering.

The page, set up by ‘Mellers’ friend and former teammate Gareth Thomas says: “Our Leader, Legend, mate, needs your help. On Tuesday, about 11.30 am Mellers had an accident at work. He fell 20ft plus through a corrugated roof down on to concrete. He is currently in John Radcliffe hospital recovering. He had an operation yesterday on his elbow and hand, with pins and screws. The rest of his injuries don’t require surgery. A fracture to the pelvis, and chip to a bone in his back, 2 broken ribs which punctured his lung, and a nick on the liver (but they are happy internally is all okay now). Numerous stitches and this is what I can remember. So all in all he’s gonna need a lot of rehabilitation, a lot of positivity, and a lot of love.

Thomas’ page had been hoping to raise £1,000 but has already busted through the £5,000 mark. Thomas wrote: “I’m trying to help in any way I can, so if we could help financially as well as mentally, and physically then why not. He will be out of work football etc for a while so every little will help with the family and life in general.”

Melledew is well regarded in the Berkshire football community, particularly as he lead Thatcham in the Vase final victory – becoming the counties first club to lift the trophy in its history.

Former manager Danny Robinson, now Hungerford Town boss, was among those leading the tributes on social media saying: “Wishing Meller’s a very speedy recovery. Is a true leader a great player and a top bloke. Please if you can in this tough time give what you can!”

Meanwhile, the official Thatcham Town Twitter account posted: “We have received some news that our former captain Tom “Mellers” Melledew has had an accident while at work and is currently in hospital. Gareth Thomas has set up a GoFundMe page, please help if you can. Thatcham Town FC wishes Tom a speedy recovery.”

Meller’s most recent midfield partner, and hopefully his manager next season – Jamie McClurg said: “Let’s get round Mels people, donate what you can.” while co-Moles boss Carl Withers said: “Awful news regarding Mellers and I’m sure I speak on behalf of all the 1st team lads at Binfield FC in wishing him a speedy recovery. Please if you can during these tough times give what you can in helping him and his family during his recovery.”

If you are able to donate anything, the GoFundMe page is here.
