Sandhurst Town and manager Luke Turkington marked their debut in the Hellenic League with a draw against relative division old-timers Chalfont Wasps on Saturday afternoon writes Mark Pugh.

Kicking-off at Bottom Meadow, ‘the Fizzers’ gave a tentative start to their first league foray outside of the Combined Counties League. Both sides seemed to be content in the first 45 mins to find out about each other as the players went in for a deserved half time drink – a little bit like boxers just working each other out.

Town I think, could just about claim the bragging rights thanks to Mark Thomas and skipper Danny Turner spearheading attacks on the Wasps goalkeeper Mark Sweeney.

‘Wasps number 7 Sandy Garlowa was certainly giving the Sandhurst back four something to think about’

Chalfont themselves had some pace up front in number 7 Sandy Garlowa, he was certainly giving the Sandhurst back four something to think about.

The second half saw the home side really going for the win and for the majority of the second period had their visitors pinned in their own half. Richard Hughes and Thomas having good chances to put Sandhurst in front.

It was clear towards the end of the 90 that both side were beginning to feel the heat from the late summer heatwave and it meant several chances went begging with some untidy marking and passing meaning it was a case of defence on top.

As the end of the 90 minutes ticked around both sides were clearly frustrated at not being able to claim opening day bragging rights but should be pleased with the performance on a hot hot opening day.

If Sandhurst can maintain their strength in defence and fine tune that forward line the new boys to the Hellenic may just be in with a shout of reclaiming a place at step five that they lost in 2013.

It’s a trip to fellow new boys AFC Aldermaston in a weeks’ time for the Fizzers before a tantalising home derby game against Clive McNelly’s Wokingham and Emmbrook. You can see all the results from Division 1 East and the league table here.
