Bracknell Town now have an abundance of players capable of claiming the centre back positions at the club and player/manager Carl Davies is all to aware that he will have to fight for his position.

Davies was interviewed by the Bracknell News’ Dave Wright this week and said that the days of automatic spots in the team no longer existed.

Bracknell had a pretty settled first team last season with the majority of appearances coming from a tight knit squad of 16 or 17 players.

Amongst them players like captain Dave Hancock and winger Khalid Senussi proved their versatility in covering roles – Hancock occasionally switched from right back to centre back while Senussi proved himself capable as a full back.

Davies though has stiff competition in the centre of defence with new boys Matt Day, James Tripp and Tom Willment joining the manager and Joe Gater at Larges Lane.

The Robins boss said to Wright in the interview: “This is how it should be. We now have competition in all positions and that can only benefit the team. It will keep all players on their toes, they will need to perform.”

Picking the team

Talking about the managerial structure, Davies confirmed it would be coaches Geoff Warner, Gavin Smith and Michael Butcher who would have the final say on the match day squad.

Davies said he would remain impartial when it came to team selection, adding: “If I am told there are two better than me [in central defence] at the minute then they will be playing and I will be on the bench, it’s as simple as that. I won’t sulk, I am past that.”.

The full interview with Carl Davies is in this weeks Bracknell News, available now.
