The Uhlsport Hellenic Premier League season starts on Tuesday evening with local clubs Ascot United, Bracknell Town and Binfield all in action.
And if you thought that was a crow-barred excuse to chuck a few links your way, here’s what you can expect from this evenings opening matches:
One of the most competitive division’s locally for years..
There is genuine hope that Binfield or Bracknell Town (or both for that matter) will be able to mount a title challenge this season. Both sides have strengthened considerably and crucially retained key players from last season.
Both look strong going forward but perhaps the question marks around ‘can a Berkshire side finally win the Hellenic Premier League?’ will be answered by how much of an improvement both sides have made at the back.
If our Hellenic Panel is to be believed though, it is Thatcham Town’s title to lose.
What’s going to happen to Ascot?
Even after our years of watching non league football, we just don’t know. They were beaten 2-0 by a youthful Hayes & Yeading United at the weekend and have signed the Windsor captain and goalkeeper Carl Dennison as well as prolific young Hellenic Premier League striker Ben Knight. But more than that is not forthcoming from the club.
So far our Premier League poll suggests the Yellamen are way behind their local rivals but time will tell.
Déjà vu for Binfield
If losing the Reading Senior Cup Final after leading Henley Town 2-1 in May was tough to take, the fixture calendar in it’s usual twisted (and entirely coincidental) way has decided the best way for the Moles to get over last seasons heart-break is to relive it on day one.
Roger Herridge’s side visit Henley Town this evening and won’t be short of motivation..
The toughest of starts for Bracknell
Similarly, Bracknell’s early season woes in 2015 were brought about by a tough start that saw them play all four fancied sides in the opening matches of the 15/16 season.
It’s not any easier this time with an opener at 14/15 champions Flackwell Heath tonight and the toughest game of the FA Cup’s opening round on Saturday at Thatcham Town.
It’s going to be busy
The midweek start is quickly followed by kick-off of the 2016/17 Emirates FA Cup on Saturday. Binfield and Bracknell both have quick turnarounds while Ascot play on Tuesday and Friday this week.
Here’s the local draw for the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup.
