In front of a healthy 150 crowd, Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division side Ascot United advanced into the Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup as a goal in each half saw off Division One West side Milton United.

The opening twenty minutes was extremely competitive with little penalty area action as neither team wanted to give an inch.

The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute when a corner was knocked down and James Brazier was in the right place to tap home the loose ball from close range.

Luke Wilson had two great chances for the home side in the next five minutes but he couldn’t take either of them. Firstly, he was denied by goalkeeper Ben Maidens who made a fine save before a weak chip was straight at Maidens with a lot of the goal to aim at.

On forty minutes, Milton had a good chance to score as Connor Forster and Tom Austin combined for the latter to pick out Daniele Piscopo who fired over from inside the penalty area.

Charlie Samuels doubled the lead in the 48th minute with a great strike from sixteen yards out after being set up by Samir Regragui to give the Yellamen a bit of breathing room.

Clear cut chances were then traded as Samuels pounced on a short pass back and just missed to the right before Jonathan Naish had a glorious chance for the visitors but he somehow screwed his shot left with the big central defender still up following a free-kick.

Naish was replaced shortly afterwards as Milton gambled on three at the back with three up front and it nearly paid off with Austin sending an effort narrowly over from 25 yards.

Austin almost turned provider as his free-kick was headed over by Niall Hodgkins as the visitors were unable to claw their way back into the match.

Two late Ascot chances saw substitute James Goodey fire in a dipping long range effort that was saved before Samuels hit the bar late on but it mattered not as the hosts held on to win 2-0.

With victory tonight, Ascot can look forward to hosting Evo-Stik Southern League side Didcot Town in a fortnight’s time.
