Bracknell Town recorded a hard fought victory away at Longlevens on Saturday but Ascot United and Binfield both suffered home defeats

For Mark Tallentire’s side it was a fourth win in a row in all competitions and although they sit in tenth place, the Robins have enough games in hand to move above everybody bar free-scoring Thame United.

Bracknell started the first half very well and opened the scoring after thirty minutes when Carl Davies headed home from Carl Withers’ corner.

On top and looking likely to enter the interval with a lead, Longlevens were awarded a very dubious 45th minute penalty but they gratefully accepted the chance to draw level.

It was the hosts who started the second period on top but after some excellent play by Seb Bowerman, Adam Cornell was on hand to coolly finish for his sixteenth goal of this campaign and move his side ahead once again.

Longlevens nearly snatched a point though but two clearances off the line by the Robins ensured they returned back to Berkshire with all three points.

Dry spell for Yellamen

Ascot United suffered their third straight defeat in a run which has seen them fail to score a goal as visitors Lydney Town left the Racecourse Ground with a 2-0 victory.

Both goals came in the second half and were almost identical in fashion with two attempted clearances from goalkeeper Carl Dennison rebounding off attacking players into the net.

Firstly, Dennison’s attempted clearance hit the backside of striker Pat Gibbs before rolling into the goal before it was the turn of Niall Halford to see the ball rebound off him for the second goal.

Without the services of strikers Charlie Samuels and Ben Knight, it’s clearly a struggle in front of goal for Jeff Lamb’s side with the manager forced to play himself for the seventh time this season.

Lamb has now turned to the services of veteran strikers Gavin Smith and Jon Palmer with both of those key players in Alan Taylor’s Bracknell Town Southern League side a decade ago.

Debuts for Binfield and dismissal for Broome

Binfield went one better than the Yellamen and not in a good way as Saturday’s 3-1 defeat against Brimscombe & Thrupp was their fourth successive defeat.

Manager Roger Herridge gave a first start to recent signing Ben Poynter with fellow new signings Mo Davies and Grant Kemp introduced off the bench but some poor defending ensures the Lilywhites took the points in what was generally an even game.

Josh Jones put the visitors ahead with a spectacular dipping volley before Liam Ferdinand equalised from the penalty spot after Matt Jones had been felled inside the area.

Ollie Pitt curled around the wall to put his side ahead just prior to the break and a double substitution from Herridge after the break couldn’t help when less than two minutes later Jack Smith was afforded too much space between Alex Luis and Michael Walton before firing home.

There was still time for Jack Broome to be dismissed for his second yellow card with the ten men Moles unable to claw the deficit back.

Elsewhere, leaders Thatcham Town remain five points clear at the top following a five goal demolition of Henley Town whilst Thame United climbed above Flackwell Heath into second place as they defeated the Heathens 2-1 with Andrew Gledhill scoring the winner for his incredible 26th goal so far this season from just fourteen matches.

Highmoor-IBIS shared four goals with Tuffley Rovers, Highworth Town defeated Brackley Town Saints and Burnham suffered another defeat losing 5-1 away at Royal Wootton Bassett Town.

The full Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Divisions results from the weekend are:

Ascot United 0-2 Lydney Town
Binfield 1-3 Brimscombe & Thrupp
Flackwell Heath 1-2 Thame United
Henley Town 0-5 Thatcham Town
