The weather put paid to a large number of fixtures this weekend meaning we had only three of our featured teams in action and all of them secured victories.

We were in attendance as Wokingham & Emmbrook saw off Chinnor 3-1 in Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One East. The first thirty minutes were very even with both sides having  two good chances to score.

The difference was that Sumas keeper Sean Woodward pulled off two good saves to deny the visitors but the home took both of their opportunities. The first goal came as early as two minutes and a nice move ended with Elliott Rushforth sending in a hanging cross which Luke Scope headed home unchallenged. Having made the first goal, Rushforth got himself on the score-sheet with an absolute belter rifled in via the underside of the bar from about thirty yards.

Chinnor pulled a goal back via the penalty spot early in the second half but substitute Jake White secured the points for Dan Bateman’s side finishing well with his left from from outside the area. The win at Lowther Road moves Wokingham up into fourth place.

In the Premier Division, Binfield looked like they would have no trouble seeing Abingdon United as the raced into a three goal lead inside half an hour. Carlo Santoro opened the scoring after six minutes before wily striker Ian Davies found the back of the net twice more.

United got a lifeline when the Moles stopped for an offside whistle which never came and the Abingdon player raced clear to score. With fifteen minutes left the visitors pulled a second goal back and Binfield were reduced to ten men when Joe Gritt was dismissed but Roger Herridge’s side held on for their eighth league win in the last ten matches.

Last but no means least were Ascot United who travelled to Wallingford Town in the Bluefin Sports Hellenic Supplementary Cup and although it took extra time, the Yellaman eventually came away 3-2 victors.

It was the hosts who struck third awarded a 30th minute penalty and although Lee Allen made the initial save from Jack McLaughlin’s spot-kick, Steve Gair slotted home the rebound. With twelve minutes of the second half left Barry Dunbar levelled matters from Rob Lazarczuk’s cross to send the match into extra time.

After Lazarczuk’s shot was tipped onto the post Ben Hodges put Ascot ahead only for Zac Field to equalise but Dunbar had the last word notching his second goal to send United into the Quarter-Finals.
