The Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One East kicked off at the weekend with two games that produced sixteen goals between them.

Woodley United kicked off their league campaign with a trip to one of the preseason favourites for promotion, Abingdon Town. The Kestrals were expected to have a tough afternoon and it looked as if that was going to be the case as Abingdon controlled the game and had several shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes.

However, Woodley turned the game on its head by scoring three goals in four minutes. First some quick passing caught out the high line of Abingdon’s defence and allowed Liam Wilson to run from half way and slot past the keeper.

The second goal came after cross from the left lead to Abingdon defender Tristan Lawrence heading the ball into the top corner of his own net.

Shortly after the restart Woodley again got behind the Abbot’s high defensive line. This time it was Kai Parton-Edey who ran in under little pressure to score and put his side 3-0 up.

Abingdon were back on terms before the break as Anaclet Odhiambo scored a goal either side of a penalty from Elliott Osbourne. Odhiambo was proving to be a real handful and he completed his hat-trick shortly after the break when a ball into the box was not dealt with and he headed in unmarked at the back post.

Woodley were not done yet as Kai Parton-Edey who had worked tirelessly as the lone striker received the ball on 25 yards out, shrugged off his marker and lobbed the keeper who was only slightly off his line.

Unfortunately, the Abbot’s would have the final say as Odhiambo and Osbourne grabbed one more goal each to leave the final score of a thrilling game 6-4.

In the other game in the division Holyport were unlucky to leave with nothing from their trip to another one of the pre-season favourites, Burnham. The Villagers were the better side for much of the game and lead 2-1 thanks to two goals from Fabian Driffill. However, towards the end of the game Holyport noticeably tired, possibly due to their Supplementary Cup victory in midweek, and the Blues were able to take all three points winning 4-2.

Opening day delight for the Boars

In the Combined Counties League Division One Eversley & California made a perfect start to the season with a 3-0 win away at Chessington & Hook United. The Boars went ahead shortly after half time with a goal from Ste Peacock. Cameron Miller got a second before a penalty from Mo Davies completed the job and gave new manager Ellis Woods a good in in his first competitive game as manager.

The Division’s other local representatives, Sandhurst Town, did not have as much success on the opening day as they lost 2-0 at home to Epsom & Ewell. The Fizzers went behind to an early goal as a cross from the right wing went over the heads of everyone in the box, and into the back of the net. The salts doubled their lead before half time and Sandhurst were not able to respond in the second half meaning they start their campaign with a defeat.
