Last weekend saw the return of the FA Cup for the 2018/19 season. Step 4-6 clubs up and down the country were looking to move one step closer to Wembley as they took part in the Extra Preliminary Round of the world’s oldest national football competition.

Three teams looking to perform some giant killing were local Hellenic League and Combined Counties sides Sandhurst Town, Woodley United and Holyport who were all drawn against clubs from the level above, Step 5.

Sandhurst Town played out a 1-1 draw with Sydenhams (Wessex) League Premier Division side Lymington Town. The Fizzers took the lead in the first half through Paul Rake but despite a strong and organised performance from Sandhurst the Linnets equalised after the break.

The two sides will now play a replay on Wednesday (15th August) at Fawcetts Field, home to New Milton Town, as Lymington’s ground is not available due to them sharing it with the local cricket club.

Woodley United travelled to Bedfordshire to face Spartan South Midlands Premier Division side Crawley Green. The Kestrels took the lead in the 19th minute as Liam Wilson intercepted a ball from the Crawley Green keeper and slotted in.

The Dirty Clarets equalised in controversial fashion as keeper Ellis-Jones looked to have cleared a goal bound effort off the post, but the Assistant Referee ruled it had crossed the line. Crawley Green then took the lead on the stroke of half time.

During the break Ellis-Jones had to be replaced after being involved in a big collision in the first half, which meant striker Kai Parton-Edey had to go in goal. It proved to be the turning point as Crawley Green scored five more unanswered goals run out 7-1 winners.

Holyport were looking to win their first ever FA Cup match as they hosted Brimscombe & Thrupp of the Hellenic Premier Division, and the Villagers took the lead as Daniel Rapley finished off some good work from Josh Lowther.

However, the Lilywhites would hit back before the break scoring two goals to lead 2-1 at half time; a scoreline that was slightly harsh on Holyport. Despite their best efforts, Derek Sweetman’s men were not able to get back on level terms as the game finished 2-1.

League action

Away from the FA Cup Eversley & California made it two wins from two in the Combined Counties Division One as they beat AC London 2-0.

The Boars, who were playing their first home game of the season, scored mid-way through the first half through Ste Peacock, and the forward doubled the advantage mid-way through the second half from the penalty spot.

Shortly after the goal Eversley were down to 10 men as Brad Brown picked up his second yellow card but the team in and managed to secure all 3 points.
