Reading City’s first foray in to the Emirates FA Cup was short lived after two tight games saw Chipping Sodbury advance after extra time on Tuesday night.

The two sides had drawn 1-1 on Saturday at Scours Lane with Alfie Grant on target and the same scoreline on Tuesday night sent the tie in to Extra Time.

An early Sodbury goal in the first period separated the two sides and it is the home team who move on to face Easington Sports in the Preliminary Round.

Opposition manager Neil Simons was full of praise for Reading though, tweeting: “Delighted to get through tonight against a very good Reading City team. Over thde two games it could have gone either way to be honest and I know Andy Findlay will be gutted tonight but they will defo go on to good things this season. So proud of the lads.”

There was a bit of controversy during extra time as the match referee apparently refused to allow a fourth substitute on to the pitch.

This season’s competition is the first to allow a fourth substitute in the qualifying rounds but it appears that information didn’t reach the match referee.

The FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round replays continue on Wednesday night with Sandhurst Town and Windsor both in action.
