Depending on how much stock you put in to early season predictions, Wantage Town have certainly laid down a marker or two in their opening four Hellenic League Premier Division fixtures of the 2018/19 season.
On Saturday the Freds beat fancied Bishop’s Cleeve 3-1 at Alfredian Park, leading 2-0 after 23 minutes with the visitors pulling one back before half time.
Wantage, who have beaten Binfield, Ardley United and Fairford Town sit top of the table after a convincing win over the Mitre’s.
Reading City are snapping at their heals though following a 3-1 home win over Fairford Town while much improved Brackley Town Saints are the other side with a 100% record having beaten Longlevens 3-2.
Muhamadou Ceesay scored twice as Flackwell Heath won their second game of the season, beating Brimscombe & Thrupp 2-0 at Wilks Park. The Lilywhites had been tagged as ‘dark horses’ in pre season but manager Sam Prior is still waiting for things to click.
His side finished sixth last season and were unbeaten in their final eight games, lifting the Gloucestershire FA Challenge Trophy in the process. Prior tweeted: “Yet another tough day at the office. Work rate was impressive but overall quality was poor. Flackwell has always been a bogey place for us to go, but the better team won on the day. Important we keep plucking away and our luck will turn! Onto the next….”
At the other end of the table, Fairford remain without a win while Abingdon United and Tuffley Rovers are also yet to pick up a point this season. Virginia Water beat the former 2-0 while the latter suffered a 2-1 defeat at previously pointless Ardley United.
