Midweek saw some of our local Step 6 sides take a break from their league campaigns to focus on cup competitions.

On Monday night Woodley United welcomed Holyport to Scours Lane for a fixture in the first round of the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Trophy, a competition which is open primarily to Step 6 and 7 teams.

The home side started brightly and deservedly took the lead on 19 minutes when a free kick rebounded off the post, the loose ball was recycled and sent back into the box, and Sam Guze arrived at the far post to slam the ball into the roof of the net.

On 31 minutes the Kestrels doubled their lead when Kai Parton-Edey scored with a great strike, straight from a free kick.

Holyport responded almost immediately when Chris Defranco volleyed home a corner to make it 2-1. The Villagers were on top now and scored an equaliser when a Matt Ensby cross went straight in as the home keeper seemed to lose the flight of the ball.

In the second half Port started strongly but it too until the 74th minute for them to take the lead when a free kick on the edge of the box was coolly converted by Jonny Feaver. Six minutes later Feaver latched onto a lovely through ball from Fabian Driffill and curled a shot in to make the final score 4-2 to Holyport.

Also in the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy, AFC Aldermaston hosted Milton United on Tuesday night.

Milton took the lead early in the first half through Henry Bone, but the Atom Men managed to equalise in the 75th minute through Michael Porter. With the scores level after 90 minutes the tie went straight to penalties. Aldermaston missed two out of their first three spot kicks and Miltonians were clinical with all of theirs, winning the shoot-out 4-1 and progressing to the next round.

Wallingford Town travelled to free scoring Abingdon Town for the first match in their group stage of the Hellenic League Division One Subsidiary Cup. Both sides had periods of pressure early on, but it was Wallingford who took the lead through Charlie Silkstone.

The hosts were able to equalise, but Wally took the lead once more, this time through Joe Webber. Once again, the Abbotts came back to level and late in the game they would go one better when they converted an injury time penalty to win 3-2.
