Wokingham & Emmbrook got 2019 off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Chinnor. The Sumas were made to work for their points as Chinnor proved far more resilient than their league standing would suggest.

The deadlock was finally broken when Elliott Rushforth drilled home a loose ball with 20 minutes to play. Wokingham were forced to play the final few minutes with 10 men as Chris Robson was shown a straight red card for a late challenge.

Wallingford Town were left to rue missed chances as a solitary goal, 5 minutes before half time, was enough for Didcot Town Development to head home with all the points.

Wally’s search for an equaliser in the second half was hampered when Euan Aitchinson picked up two yellow cards in three minutes and received his marching orders 25 minutes from time. The defeat means Wallingford missed the chance to climb to second in the table.

Another side who endured a disappointing afternoon were Eversley & California. The Boars were hosting Tooting Bec in what was a tough test for Matt Angell’s first game in charge of the club.

After a goalless first half Tooting opened the scoring 10 minutes after the break as a cross was not properly cleared and the visitors went on to double their advantage on 70 minutes. Late in the game, with Eversley pushing to find a way back into the match, Tooting added a third to leave the final score 3-0.

Sandhurst through in County Cup

Away from league action, Sandhurst Town recorded an impressive victory over Burnham in a competitive Bucks & Berks Senior Trophy Quarter Final.

Despite being keenly contested the game remained goalless until the 77th minute when Paddy Gardner ran onto a crossfield ball and fired a shot into the far corner of the net to make it 1-0 to the Fizzers.

Sandhurst sealed the victory on 85 minutes when Paul Rake ran through the defence, rounded the keeper and smashed the ball in of the underside of the bar.

The victory was particularly impressive as it was the first time Burnham had lost since October and only the third time they had failed to score in 34 games this season. The Fizzers will now await the draw for the semi-final with the fixtures due to be played in early February.
