There were only two games in the Hellenic League Division One East at the weekend, but they were both high scoring affairs and produced a massive 14 goals between them.

The first of the two fixtures saw Wokingham & Emmbrook travel to promotion chasing Thame Rangers. After a slow first 35 minutes where neither side created any chances, the game burst into life as James Clark won the ball and fed Josh Harris who slotted home from 10 yards to make it 1-0 to the Sumas.

Elliot Rushforth then doubled the lead with a solo run and cool finish to make it 2-0 at the break. Ten minutes into the second half Thame pulled one back but despite the hosts being on top Wokingham restored their two-goal lead five minutes later when Clark let fly from 22 yards and found the corner of the net.

Thame struck back immediately to make it 3-2 but the Sumas pulled away again when a Ben Broadhurst free kick was headed home by George Marsh (pictured top).

With 5 minutes to go Thame made it 4-3 and piled on the pressure until deep into injury time when a free kick fell loose in the box and a home player was quickest to react and fired the ball into the roof of the net with the last kick of the game to make it 4-4.

Aldermaston leave it late

In the other Hellenic Division One East game AFC Aldermaston welcomed league leaders Burnham to the Rec Soc. The Atom Men took the lead on 34 minutes when Victor Sesay put them 1-0 up with his first goal of the season. Burnham equalised on the stroke of half time and then took the lead midway through the second half, but Aldermaston got back on level terms through Sid Gbla.

The visitors looked to have secured all the points when they regained the lead late in the game, but Ricardo Catlyn netted deep into injury time to make it 3-3 and to give the Atoms a very credible draw against the runaway leaders of the division.

Combined Counties League

It was a disappointing afternoon for both local representatives in the Combined Counties Division One. Eversley & California were beaten. 3-1 in their trip to Dorking Wanderers Reserves. The Boars were trailing 2-0 at half time but 10 minutes into the second half they got back into the game when Ryan Whyte scored a towering header to make it 2-1.

Despite Eversley’s best efforts it was not to be as Dorking added a third on 90 minutes to make the final score 3-1 and leave Matt Angell still looking for his first points as manager.

Sandhurst Town did not fare any better in their match at league leaders Frimley Green. There was an enforced stoppage early in the game as the linesman took a fall, hitting his head on the way down.

Frimley reacted better to the delay and went into half time 1-0 up after a goal on the half hour mark. In the second half the home side added another two goals, and to add further frustration, Fizzers’ striker Charlie Oakley had a penalty saved leaving the final score 3-0 to Frimley.

Woodley United made it 2 wins in 2 games for 2019 as they defeated Chalvey Sports in the Supplementary Cup. The Kestrals did not have it all their own way as Chalvey took the lead from the spot on 38 minutes and maintained their advantage well into the second half.

Woodley got back on terms on 72 minutes when a free kick was not fully cleared, the ball was recycled, and Harry Swabey eventually turned the ball in after a good save from the Stabmonks’ keeper. 10 minutes from time Woodley got the winner as another free kick was headed back by Leon Mannion and Teddy Thomas fired in. The Kestral travel to Milton United in the next round.

Holyport did not fare as well in their Reading Senior Cup tie, being beaten 1-0 by Thames Valley Premier League side Wrightchoice & Unity CSA after extra time.

Port were unlucky to hit the bar twice, have two shots cleared off the line and several efforts saved by the home keeper but Wrightchoice held out before scoring the winner 7 minutes from the end of extra time.

Wallingford Town were also defeated by Thames Valley Premier opposition, being knocked out of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy by Marlow United. Charlie Silkstone had twice given Wally the lead in the first half, but Marlow fought back on both occasions and scored their winner 10 minutes from time in.
