Hungerford Town have moved within one point of Gloucester City after a 2-0 victory over Mark McGhee’s Eastbourne Borough.

The blustery winds made things difficult for both sides to play in and tough viewing for the spectators. Matt Jones was forced off with shoulder injury after a strong challenge, a challenge which was somehow missed by the referee.

Hungerford took the lead on 42 minutes through Rhys Kavanagh, a goal which the visitors irately contested with the linesman resulting in the goalkeeper receiving a booking.

The Eastbourne players were convinced the ball hadn’t crossed the line. Darren Foxley who was a threat throughout went close to scoring when his free kick hit the crossbar.

The all important second goal came on 85 minutes from centre back Marvel Ekpiteta who poked home after a defensive error. With results elsewhere going in Hungerford’s favour the huge win will give The Crusaders confidence before heading to Billericay next Saturday.

Unfortunately, Saturday was Josh Martin’s last appearance for Hungerford, the Birmingham City loanee has been outstanding in defence. A player who looks to have a bright future in the game.

Newbury lost their first league game of the season as they went down 1-0 away to Maidenhead Town. Earlier in the week it was announced that Newbury will be playing their home games at Henwick Lane, Thatcham, as from next season. Positive news as the club try and build a relationship with the local authorities.

Thatcham Town’s game at Cinderford Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
