It doesn’t get much better in terms of opening day wins than coming from a goal down to take all three points and that’s exactly what Reading City did thanks in no small part to winger Khalid Simmo in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier.

It was a very different looking City side that hosted Shrivenham at The Rivermoor but after going a goal down in the first half there really was only ever likely to be one winner.

City had the majority of the pressure but were wayward in their shooting in the first half until Devonn Reid levelled things from the penalty spot in the second half.

After that it was one way traffic really and it was Simmo who had a hand in both goals, a jinking move on the right wing saw him cut inside to make it 2-1 and then a late burst forward saw him get the cross in for Mo Davies to make it safe.

Elsewhere in the Hellenic Premier, a tough day for Windsor on the road to Westfields in Herefordshire where they were beaten 5-0 but a terrific return for Binfield in Gloucestershire where an Asa Povey strike game the Moles a 1-0 win over Brimscombe & Thrupp.

Division One East saw it all square between last seasons second and third placed sides as Thame Rangers drew 2-2 with AFC Aldermaston.

In the Combined Counties League Premier, Ascot United got off to a winning start at Cobham with a 2-0 win with strikes from Harry Laflin and Jonny Denton. You can read the Yellamen report here at ascotunited.co.uk.

In Division One, Eversley & California were beaten 3-0 at Walton & Hersham while Sandhurst Town earned what might turn out to be a valuable point at home to Tooting Bec after Marvin Hinds turned in an equaliser from Luke Cox’s free kick.

In the Vanarama National League, it was a perfect start for Maidenhead United who won 1-0 at Stockport County in a 12.30 kick off live on BT Sport.

The Magpies winner came from Jake Cassidy in the 79th minutes. There might be highlights available but sadly, National League rules mean clubs can’t show them – there is a report here though on the Maidenhead website.

And finally, a late late defeat for Slough Town who were beaten at the death by newly promoted Dorking Wanderers while it was slightly heavier for Hungerford Town who lost 4-1 at Hemel Hempstead Town.
