It might not have been a classic of a fixture as Wokingham & Emmbrook beat AFC Aldermaston 2-0 but Friday night under the lights at Lowther Road was about so much more than the match.

Friday 9th August 2019 at Emmbrook Sports & Social Club was the culmination of two decades of hard work by a small group of people, a dream of returning home and seeing that dream quite literally light up.

It’s been a week of bumper crowds as well with both Binfield and Reading City racking up impressive attendances on Monday night and Friday was the turn of Lowther Road as 183 people watched on.

Adam Edwards was the man who got the first goal on the night and wrote himself in to the Sumas history books with a curling strike from the left hand side of the penalty box on the stroke of half time.

Prior to that it was a game of few chances on a pitch with little give despite the rain and efforts of the ground staff and Aldermaston looking perhaps like a side getting to grips with a fixture list that has seen them play Saturday, Tuesday and Friday this week.

In contrast, league rivals Holyport have played just the once and won’t play again until Tuesday and Wokingham next play at home on Tuesday night.

The second half continued in a similar vein but the Sumas seeing particular joy down the Atom Men’s right wing and the second goal came after some industrious work by Elliott Rushforth found Jake White and he, like Edwards struck from outside of the box to beat the goalkeeper.

As the final whistle blew, a cheer went up around the ground which, this reporter would like to think anyway, was for so much more than just the three points.
