Striker Dan Roberts was the hero for Slough Town on Saturday as his hat trick helped the 10-man Rebels defeat Dorking Wanderers 5-3 in an extraordinary contest at the Meadowbank Stadium.

The result hauled Neil Baker and Jon Underwood’s side back up to second in the Vanarama National League South table and emphatically ended a run of two draws and a defeat in the last three fixtures.

That it came as well following what appears to be a harsh dismissal of debutant Paul Hodges in the 54th minute marks it out as an impressive result, especially with Slough going in 2-1 down at half time.

Roberts scored in the first half, levelling things up on 16 minutes after Dorking had gone ahead on 12 minutes, and the home side would score their second just before the half hour mark.

The Rebels number 17 equalised again on 49 minutes from just outside the area but as Hodges red card followed, some Slough fans may have thought the game was up.

No chance, Roberts rose highest to head home on 64 and despite Dorking equalising, goals from Warren Harris (78′) and Ben Harris (83′) secured a superb win for the East Berks side.

Of the other games played on Saturday, Maidenhead United remain only a point clear of the National League relegation zone after a 2-0 defeat to near neighbours Woking, making it three straight defeats since the impressive 2-0 win at Solihull Moors on the 1st February.

Thatcham Town got back to winning ways, here’s that word ’emphatically’ again, but there’s little other way of describing an 8-0 win over Basingstoke Town after a run of three straight defeats in the BetVictor Southern League South Division One.

John Mills got his first goal for the Kingfishers while Felipe Barcelos, doubles for Zak Westlake and James Ollis and two own goals accounted for the other strikes.

Ascot United got back to winning ways in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division, winning 2-1 at Abbey Rangers thanks to second half goals from Ben Hodge and an 85th minute Harry Laflin winner.

The only game played in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One East saw Chalvey Sports beaten 2-1 at Arbour Park by Long Crendon, Cheyenne Cripps with the Stabmonks goal while Berks County took advantage of a weather affected Thames Valley Premier League fixture list to go back to the top of the division with a 1-0 win at home to Windlesham United, Ebby Opoku-Ware on target for the Swords.
