A ninth minute header for Binfield debutant Adam Cornell ensured Binfield would maintain pressure on top of the table Westfield in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier title race.

Cornell scored early in the 1-0 win over Lydney Town from Jack Thompson-Wheeler’s cross, rising highest to beat Richard Thomas in goal.

It was otherwise a game of very few chances for either side, particularly in the first half.

The introduction of Sean McCormack – on dual registration from Bracknell Town – did liven things up a little but it was Lydney’s Tom Handley who went closest to scoring but his bullet strike from range cannoned back off the post.

The visitors piled pressure on the Binfield goal as the clock ticked down but the Moles held on for an important win, even more so as top of the table Westfields were held to a 1-1 draw by Flackwell Heath.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Windsor suffered a 3-0 loss away at third placed Fairford Town while Reading City were beaten 1-0 at home by Brimscombe & Thrupp.

In the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division, two Aiden Higgs goals gave Ascot United a 2-0 win at home to Southall, maintaining their six point lead at the top of the table.

The game was a big one for full back George Lock, as he became the latest Yellaman to reach 100 appearances for the club.

In the BetVictor Southern League South Division One, Thatcham Town’s return to winning ways continued with a 4-0 win at Mangotsfield United.

Felipe Barcelos scored twice in the first half along with Lewis Coyle, and an own goal in the second sent the Kingfishers back to the top of the table after Frome Town were held to a 2-2 draw at Paulton Rovers.

Bracknell Town edged closed to the BetVictor Isthmian League South Central Division One play offs with a big 5-1 win at home to Harlow Town. Read Nick Calvert’s report here.
