For a moment, Eversley & California had three points in the bag in the opening Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Division One with FC Deportivo Galicia but the last kick of the game saw them come away with a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Eversley had been in control for much of the first half with the best chances falling to Cameron Edwin, he had one effort saved from a terrific Ross McKernan shot and a second when through on goal.
It was the second half that saw things heat up and on another day, Lewis Robson could have had himself a hat-trick. Robson’s first chance saw him square to Edwin when perhaps he should have been a bit more selfish, the second at the opposite post when he skied an effort.
At the other end, Liam Vaughan’s goal led a bit of a charmed life in the second 45, as Deportivo came out and took the game by the scruff of the neck but he was more than a match for anything thrown at him.
Robson’s third chance did result in a goal, breaking the deadlock. Captain Ali Dickie played him in after good work by substitute Cameron Blackie and he raced clear, slotting home with minutes to go.
A late substitute for the visitors though turned the game on its head, levelling the scores with the very last kick of the game.
Elsewhere, in Division One, Sandhurst Town’s opening day encounter at Westside ended in a 5-1 defeat for the Fizzers, Jack Sharman getting the consolation goal.
