Jake Cassidy has left Maidenhead United after six months to join Sky Bet League Two side Stevenage.

The 26-year-old former Welsh U21 striker made 28 appearances for the Magpies, collecting six goals along the way.

The target man thanked the club on his Instagram account, and said he was looking forward to a new challenge at his new club.

‘Failure to find a replacement for a shrinking squad will be catastrophic for the Magpies ambitions’

There were mixed reactions when the news that Cassidy would be leaving the club broke at midday.

The striker played a centre-forward role during his time with the Magpies, with a key focus on winning long balls from the back to head down towards fellow strikers such as Josh Kelly and Danny Whitehall.

The announcement that a five-figure fee had been agreed by the two clubs will be extremely beneficial to Maidenhead, of course. The money could be used to find a capable player or two to strengthen a side that have struggled with injuries and suspensions throughout the season. Failure to find a replacement for a shrinking squad will be catastrophic for the Magpies ambitions.

Cassidy, whilst a fantastic footballer and a true gentleman off the pitch, occasionally seemed to struggle to be compatible with his fellow teammates when the match day squad was changed on a weekly basis.

Nevertheless, Cassidy’s contributions helped to secure an extra point or two on throughout his tenure at the club, and he should be a good signing for a struggling Stevenage who sit bottom of League Two. Now, the focus for Maidenhead is on signing reinforcements; a tough run of fixtures, and several long trips to the North, mean that the Magpies need as many players as possible over the next few months if they are to ensure survival in the National League for a third year running.
