Woodley United shock title chasers as Sandhurst Town make final promotion push

Woodley United did East Berkshire neighbours Ascot United a huge favour in the Southern Region Women’s Football League Division 1, taking all three points off Barton Rovers in a 3-0 win in Reading.

The Kestrels are on a superb five match winning run and weathered a bit of pressure early on in the game with May Hamblin opening the scoring on 28 minutes after her initial shot was saved.

Barton looked determined to get back in the game, switching to a front three after the break but Tiff Newland extended Woodley’s lead on 50 minutes and Rosie Page-Smith rounded things off with the third of the afternoon as well as a terrific clean sheet for goalkeeper Emily Sherwood.

Over at Ascot United, the Yellawomen ended their sequence of two draws with a 4-1 win over Wargrave Ladies.

Amy Woollard, Lauren Broadhurst, Hannah Evans and Courtney Gibbons all scored for Darrell Evans side who are four points clear of New Milton Town at the top of the table.

The the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League Connie Wilson marked her Bracknell Town debut with a hat-trick for the reserves as they beat Thatcham Town 7-1.

Jo Anderson saved a penalty for the Robins with the score at 2-0 but it was all but one-way traffic with goals for Nicky Edwards (2), Loren Cardy and Ariesha Stephenson-Lewis.

Sandhurst Town can still seal promotion thanks to as 6-2 win at Taplow United. Shellie Irvine hit a hat trick and there were goals for Nicola Dixon, Jessica Loomes and Shannon Mather.
