As far as end of season runs go Woodley United Ladies eight game winning streak is right up there and has propelled them to within a whisker of claiming a runners up spot in the Southern Region Women’s League Division 1 following a 2-1 win over Winchester City Flyers Reserves.

The Kestrels can mathematically overhaul current second placed side New Milton Town but after neighbours and leaders Ascot United were awarded the points from their postponed fixture with Wycombe Wanderers they can no longer catch the Yellawomen.

Woodley have three games left of what had been an extraordinary second half of the season for the club and extended their winning streak on Sunday with a 2-1 win over bottom side Winchester City Flyers Reserves.

United made hard work of City though with Elizabeth Reid giving the visitors to Bulmershe Pavilion the lead a little against the run of play.

Parity was restored eight minutes later when May Hamblin scored her sixth goal of the season converting Mollie Haines cross and returned the favour just before the half time break – Haines sending United in with a 2-1 lead.

Woodley had a string of opportunities in the second half to extend their lead but it was City who threatened to finish with a flourish and three decent chances to level things up but Woodley’s back line stood firm.
