In one of the surprising moves of the summer, it has been confirmed Sandhurst Town’s Ladies team will make a two division jump to join the Southern Region Women’s Football League Division 1.

The Fizzers had competed in the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League since the 2012/13 season and finished fifth in Division 2 East last season and in Shellie Irvine (pictured) and Shannon Mather, had two of the division’s top five goalscorers.

Sandhurst chairman Tony Dean has released a statement to Football in Bracknell on the change at the Fizzers, who’s men’s side have moved back to the Combined Counties League after two seasons in the Hellenic League. It reads:

Sandhurst Town FC is pleased to announce its application for promotion from the Women’s County League to the Women’s County Regional League for season 2018/19 has been successful. The club has for a long time succeeded in having a strong pathway from male youth football into senior football with teams playing in the Allied Counties Youth Football League, UHL Hellenic Football League and next season returning to the Combined Counties League.

This represents a major step forward in the further development of the club and raises the profile of women’s football and our ladies team in the area in keeping with the quality of our facilities and our status as a senior club.

Commenting on the development, club Chairman Tony Dean said: “The club needs to ensure we have an attractive offering in women’s football and a quality pathway for girls from junior into senior football.”

Trials for the new team will take place at the clubs Bottom Meadow venue within Sandhurst Memorial Park on 15th July starting at 1-30pm with the new season starting in September.

New manager

The Fizzers confirmed UEFA B coach Mark Lowe will manage the new women’s team. The new manager comes with years of coaching experience with youth, men’s and ladies football and spent time in America where he secured a US Soccer Federation A licence. Dean confirmed that last seasons management team would remain in place under Lowe.

Vice President

According to the press release, Sandhurst have appointed Stan Bembenek as a club Vice President with specific oversight responsibility for the clubs women’s football development. Stan has many year’s experience of non-league football and is a former director of Reading Town FC and founder of Reading Royals Ladies which went on to form the nucleus Reading Women FC. The club are also looking to secure a number of sponsors for this team.
