It might be the ‘close season’ but competitive football hasn’t stopped for Woodley United Ladies who went unbeaten on the way to winning the league title in the Goals Reading women’s league in June.

The league is in it’s early stages of growth at Woodlands Avenue in Woodley and is one of the only dedicated small sided women’s competitions around.

As one of the leagues early adopters, Woodley United’s ladies team entered as ‘Pique Blinders’ and manager Marc Surtees has been speaking to Football in Berkshire about the teams experiences.

Surtees said: “Goals contacted me to see if we wanted to enter a team, I asked the ladies and they said yes, it was a good way to keep the fitness up during the close season. We had plenty of players interested in it and it meant people did not have to commit to every week.”

Woodley entered one team in the competition which saw eight sides competing. Surtees felt it was a great way to keep his players engaged, was well organised and lots of fun, adding that there were was a good range of abilities in the league.

“There were 8 teams, the players have really enjoyed it. It’s another opportunity for them to meet up, play football and build team spirit but also maintain their fitness levels while having fun.

“I personally would promote the league due to the fact you do not have to have a small limited squad, it is well organised, played in a good spirit with lots of smiles and laughter, some games were competitive and some less so.”

Unfortunately the Pique Blinders won’t be defending their crown as match nights fall on the Southern Region Women’s League Premier Division sides training night during the season but Surtees said the club would look to take part again at the end of next season.

Goals Reading women’s league details: Games are 20 minutes each way on Monday nights. Kick offs can be 7.30 or 8.15. Entry fee’s are £20 a team and then £30 per game.
