Once the holder of the longest contract at Reading FC Women after signing an 18-month extension in January 2017, Lauren Bruton has been named as captain of Charlton Athletic, the side she joined after departing the Royals in the summer.

The Addicks play in the FA Women’s Championship, the division below the FA WSL – previously known as the FA WSL 2 – and are embarking on their first season as a professional outfit after gaining promotion to the second tier in 2019.

Forward Bruton played over 50 times for Reading between 2013 and 2021 – who she joined after breaking through at Arsenal – but suffered with injury prior to leaving at the end of the 2020/21 season.

She is joined at Charlton by a number of former Reading teammates including Becky Jane and Emma Follis as well as youngsters Kiera Skeels and Sophie Quirk.

Writing on the Charlton website, Addicks Head Coach Karen Hills said: “Lauren is a natural-born leader and brings experience to our squad, which is why I was pleased to name her our club captain for this season.

“Lauren will help us grow on and off the pitch as we are a new group of players and new team. Lauren brings high standards to the group which is so important in helping us to create a high-performance environment.”
